Billow's bucket truck trimming a tree beside a utility pole
Tree trimming and pruning

Trimmed right. Not topped.

Limbs off the roof and the lines, deadwood out, and the crown thinned so wind passes through. We prune to keep the tree healthy, not to make it a stump.

When you need it

Why people call us to trim.

Bucket truck trimming a sycamore by the road

Limbs on the house

Branches on the roof, in the gutters or scraping siding. Overhanging limbs also keep siding damp and dirty.

Bucket working a tree between overhead lines

Limbs in the lines

Branches in the service drop to the house. Main lines on the poles are the utility's; we tell you who to call. [CONFIRM wording]

Storm prep

Dead limbs and heavy ends come out before a summer storm or an ice storm brings them down.

How we do it

How we prune.

  1. [PROJECT PHOTO: crew looking up at a tree]
    01

    Look at the whole tree

We check structure, deadwood, what the tree is over and how it is growing before we pick any cuts.

  2. [PROJECT PHOTO: walk-through with a homeowner]
    02

    Agree on the goal

Clearance off the house, deadwood out, a lighter crown, or all three. You know what we are cutting before we start.

  3. View from the bucket during trimming
    03

    Cut to standard

Cuts at the branch collar, no topping and no stubs, following the ANSI A300 pruning standard. [CONFIRM]

  4. Chipper and cut wood on a driveway
    04

    Clean up

Brush chipped and hauled, wood stacked if you want it, yard and gutters cleared of debris.

Safety and insurance

Good pruning, done safely.

  • No topping Topping leaves weak regrowth and a tree that is more dangerous later. The City of Harrisburg does not accept it on street trees, and neither do we.
  • The right season Late winter is the best time for most trees. Oaks are pruned December through March to avoid oak wilt, per Penn State Extension. Dead or broken limbs can come out any time.
  • Crews in full PPE Helmets, eye and ear protection, chaps and harnesses, following the ANSI Z133 safety standard for tree work. [CONFIRM]
  • Site and traffic control Cones and a clear drop zone. Nobody stands under a load.
  • Fully insured Certificate of insurance on request. [Insurance details]

Questions

Trimming questions.

When is the best time to trim?

Late winter, while the tree is dormant, for most trees. Oaks should be pruned December through March because of oak wilt. Spring-flowering trees are best pruned right after they bloom. Dead, broken or dangerous limbs can come off any time.

Will you top my tree to make it shorter?

No. Topping causes weak, fast regrowth and decay. If a tree is too big for its spot, we can reduce the crown properly or talk about removal.

Can you trim near power lines?

We trim around the service line to your house. Main lines on the poles belong to the utility, and they handle clearance there. [CONFIRM: line-clearance training and policy]

How often should trees be pruned?

For most yard trees, every few years is enough. Young trees benefit from structural pruning early. We tell you what your trees need on the walk-through.

Do you clean up?

Yes. Brush is chipped and hauled, and we clear debris from the yard, driveway and gutters.
