When a stump has to go.
How stump grinding goes.
-
Look and mark
We check the size and the access, and mark anything buried nearby: utility lines, irrigation, invisible dog fence. PA 811 is called before we grind below grade.
-
Grind it down
The grinder chews the stump and the main surface roots below the ground line, deep enough for grass to grow over it.
-
Chips handled
The grindings are raked back into the hole, spread as mulch, or hauled away, your choice.
-
Ready for seed
Topsoil and seed on the spot if you want the lawn back, or leave it ready for your own planting.
A grinder throws chips.
-
PA 811 before we grind Pennsylvania law requires a One Call notice before digging or disturbing the ground with powered equipment. We place it before any grinding below grade so buried lines are marked.
-

How deep do you grind?
Below the ground line, deep enough for grass to grow over the spot. If you plan to plant a tree or set a post there, tell us and we go deeper.
What happens to the grindings?
They can go back in the hole, be spread as mulch, or be hauled away. Tell us what you want when you ask for the estimate.
Can you grind stumps another company left?
Yes. Old stumps, new stumps and stumps from someone else's removal are all the same job for us.
Will the roots keep growing?
Most trees stop once the stump is ground. Some, like tree-of-heaven, black locust and some maples, can sprout from roots for a season or two; those shoots can be cut or treated.
Do I need to be home?
Usually not, as long as we can reach the stumps and gates are unlocked. We confirm access before the day.
Is stump grinding included with tree removal?
It is listed as its own line on your written price so you can choose.
Taking the tree down first?
Tell us about the stumps.
Send the form or call the shop. Tell us how many stumps, roughly how wide, and what is near them. Photos help. We call back with a price.
